During my stay in Brisbane I was on the hunt for good vegan food. I searched from beginning to end of the "best vegan food in brisbane" Google search and Govinda's was one of the most popular suggestions.
Govinda's is an Indian Hare Krishna restaurant that has been serving up vegetarian and vegan food to Brisbane for over 20 years. The buffet style restaurant on Elizabeth Street is great for a quick and affordable meal. Takeaway is available too and I took advantage of that during my trip to Brissie.
On my second night in town I was sick with the flu and just wanted to grab some takeaway and crawl into bed. I walked up Elizabeth Street searching for number ninety-nine, though I didn't have to search too hard since Govinda's glowing neon sign stood out.
After climbing the stairs and wondering if I had entered the wrong building I saw a door at the top of a flight of stairs with a small Open sign in the window. The food is buffet style and even the "Feast Meal" is affordable. Vegan options are available and staff are friendly and accommodating.
I would have loved to have dined-in and ordered the all-you-can-eat (and drink) "Feast Meal" if I wasn't sick. The Feast Meal is only $12.90 and you can have as much rice, mixed vegetable curry, dahl, kofta, tomato chutney, pappadams, salad, halava and home made ginger and mint lemonade as you want. Next time!
When I asked about the vegan options I was told that basically everything is vegan except for the desserts. Double check when you visit just to be safe.
Mixed vegetable curry with coconut milk + rice, $6.00
Daal (lentil soup), SML $4.00
Sorry for the terrible photo!
Sorry for the terrible photo!
The mixed vegetable curry made with coconut milk was warm, tasty and filling. The sauce wasn't too spicy or overpowering and the vegetables were cooked just right.
Daal has to be my favourite Indian dish. It was the first Indian dish I was introduced to by one of my dear friends who makes the most amazing daal. Since she taught me how to Daal I've been making it every couple of weeks, taking leftovers to work or feeding my friends.
Govinda's daal was full of flavour and was the perfect consistency. I usually like a little less cardamom and a little more creaminess, but it was pretty good and I would order it again. And no, that's not a typo - it was really only $4.00!
Govinda's takeaway was the perfect comfort food. I took it back to my hotel, dished it up and enjoyed it while watching this view from my room. If I'm going to be sick in bed, I don't mind spending it like that.
So, if you're in the city and after something that's quick and tasty, I don't think you can go wrong with Govinda's.
