Mango Chick and Magic Mushroom sushi rolls, $10 each
When a vegan goes to a sushi train, the struggle is real. Sitting, staring at the train in anticipation for ngiri goodness only to resort to ordering edamame beans, seaweed salad and the token vegan option from the menu ten minutes later.
Well friends, the struggle is over! Superfood Sushi is a fresh, new sushi joint on King Street, Newtown. It's Australia's first vegan sushi cafe in fact. Everything is vegan friendly, super fresh and is impeccably presented.
My friends and I ordered an Udon Soup each and a Magic Mushroom Roll and Mango Chick Roll to share. Pepe is so bubbly and passionate and was overjoyed when we each ordered an Udon Soup, explaining the ingredients and health benefits.
The Udon Soup ($7.50) was bigger than I expected and packed full of flavour. A little on the spicy side (I'm a chilli rookie) it helped clear the sinuses which was great for my cold.
The two sushi rolls ($10 each) were each cut into 7 serves and presented so well we couldn't eat before taking photos.
The Mango Chick Roll is light and fresh, made up of green rice packed with asparagus, red capsicum, cucumber and rocket with mango chilli hummus.
Though I'd have to say the Magic Mushroom Roll is my favourite. Packed with portobello and shiitake mushrooms marinated in garlic and plum vinegar, the Magic Mushroom Roll is tasty and filling enough that I could eat that alone. The vegan mayo served with the Magic Mushroom Roll is the best vegan mayo I've ever tried, we didn't leave a smidge of it behind, cleaning it up off the plate with our MM rolls.
I think the prices are reasonable considering they use black and green organic rice and am happy to pay a little extra for fresher, innovative and cruelty free sushi.
The store isn't huge, so I'd recommend going with a small group or getting takeaway and eating it at Camperdown Memorial Park picnic-style if you have a larger group.
