Vegan Review: Tamana's North Indian Diner, Newtown

Tamana's has been open in Newtown for decades and is known for their 3 Curries and Rice from the buffet, however the dosa, thali and other a-la-carte dishes are worth a try.

All of the dishes that are labelled Vegetarian Curries in the buffet are vegan except for the cheesy paneers and the creamy Vegetable Korma. The Plain/Masala Dosa and Uttapam off the a-la-carte menu are also vegan friendly. If still in doubt, the service is friendly and when I visited they were happy to help with choices and to confirm that vegetable oils are used rather than ghee or other animal fats in their cooking.

3 Curries on Rice - Aloo Palak, Channa Dhal & Saag Dhal, $13.50

The Aloo Palak (mild) is a curry made up of potatoes seasoned with cumin, mustard seeds, curry leaves and tomatoes. It was quite spicy and I have to admit I am a spice/chilli rookie and couldn't handle much of this.

Channa Dhal (med hot) is a curry of split chickpeas cooked with pumpkin and spices (bottom left curry in image above). This was so spicy I couldn't eat more than a couple of mouthfuls.

The Saag Dhal (mild) was my favourite of the 3 and is a spinach and lentil curry cooked with onion, tomatoes and a variety of spices.

I wasn't expecting the plate to be stacked as high as it was, you definitely get your money's worth! Especially if you grab a bite to eat before watching a film across the road at Dendy Cinemas.

*Dendy Movie Deal*
2 curries, rice and plain/garlic naan + a can of soft drink + a movie ticket for Dendy cinemas = $24
