Fitness Review: Bikram Yoga, Five Dock, Sydney, Australia

Detox your body and your mind at one of New South Wales best Bikram Yoga studios - Bikram Yoga Five Dock.

Bikram Yoga involves breathing your way through a series of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises in a 40 degree, humidity regulated yoga studio. Each class goes for 90 minutes and the benefits are almost instant.

After trying just about every Bikram Yoga studio in New South Wales, Australia I'm happy to say the studio at Five Dock is at the top of my list (and has stayed there for almost 2 years now).

Opened in 2012 by Brad Goodchild, the modern studio is conveniently located on the main road of Five Dock which is also home to cute cafes, various massage and nail salons and the heavenly natural health clinic, Saltuary. Free street parking is available close to the studio on Rodd Road.

The studio is large enough that competition for mat space is never an issue. Moreover and best of all, it is clean. It is the cleanest feeling studio I've visited and that makes a big difference for my practice. No manky smells or water dripping from the ceilings (I won't mention which studio that was!).

The fully qualified Bikram Yoga teachers are friendly and always willing to give pointers during class and stay back to have a chat or give advice after class. As with any training there are always different teaching styles. Whether you like the teacher who pushes you to grow your practice or the teacher whose soothing voice helps you ease into a meditative state, the team at Five Dock will positively guide you on your Bikram journey.

PASSES | Beginner's intro passes are a smart way to trial Bikram if you've never tried it before. Bikram Yoga Five Dock offers an introductory pass of $39 for 30 days. I've got myself an Unlimited Pass that works out to be $25 per week and it is so worth it.

SHOP | Bikram Yoga, Five Dock stocks yoga wear by Red Tiger and Onzie (my fave), mats, electrolyte tablets, drinks (the Raw Beets cold pressed juice by Vegpress Juicery makes me one very happy yogi) and books. If you're lucky enough you may be able to catch a class taught by international yoga teacher, Rowena Jane then grab a signed copy of her book, The Joy of Real Food (inspiring much?).

  1. I'm actually really lucky, because although I live in a smaller city, I have a great yoga studio Momentum, where I try to go at least twice a week. I haven't tried Bikram yet, usually I do the typical Hatha/Vinyasa combo, but I occaissionally take a Yin class as well. right now I'm working on my balance so I can try yoga on a stand up paddle board this summer.

  5. I've never tried Bikram yoga. I think I've done yoga twice in my life but I'm thinking of taking it up. Mr NQN is obsessed with it!

    1. Oh, I hope you like it! :) The first time I tried it was at Fitness First and it was so boring I actually fell asleep! I'm glad I have it another chance though because I love Bikram. I think Mr NQN is onto something :p
