A Vegan's Review of Mejico, Sydney CBD

Mejico is a modern Mexican inspired tapas restaurant and bar located in the Sydney CBD and Miranda. They pride themselves on market-to-table food and a fantastic selection of cocktails.

I visited the Sydney CBD Mejico on a Wednesday night for my friend Blauw's birthday celebrations and even on a weeknight the atmosphere was buzzing. Luckily we had booked as the waiting room was full of groups ordering drinks from the bar while eagerly awaiting a free table.

The service was friendly and accommodating for most dietary requirements. Our waitress helpfully pointed out the vegan options and checked with the chefs for other dishes they could veganise. The team knew their cocktails and made great recommendations compared on personal taste and food choices.

Red wine Sangria carafe, $36.00 

We started with a carafe of red wine Sangria. A good place to start yes? I think so.

It wasn't The Best Sangria I've ever tried, though it seemed to go a long way.

Guacamole; smashed table side, $14.00

Mexican fare wouldn't be the same without Guacamole, though Mejico serves it like no other. Order the guac smashed table side and a waiter will bring a tray of whole avocado, lemon, spices and pistachios to the table and make it right in front of you. It taste's fresh and the plantain chips are nice for a change from standard corn chips.

Pico De Gallo, $10.00

The Pico De Gallo is a tomato salsa made of tomato, serrano chilli, habanero, spanish onion and corn tortilla chips. It was light and fresh, with a kick!

Vegetable Tacos (without feta), $12.00

Veganise the Vegetable Tacos by requesting them sans feta and they will come filled with carrot and cumin puree, mushrooms and pickled winter vegetables. 

Jalapeño Margarita, $18.00

Mejico Highball, $18.00

By then it was time for another round of drinks and we were in the mood for cocktails. Megan and I ordered the Fiesta cocktail - Chargrilled pineapple infused José Cuervo, raspberries, vanilla, citrus, agave. It was good although I wished there were less foam.

Blauw ordered the Jalapeño Margarita - Jalapeño infused José Cuervo Traditional, Triple Sec, fresh lime, agave, chilli salt.

And Claire chose the Mejico Highball - Epsilon Reposado, agave, blood orange, citrus, rosemary.

Patatas Bravas (without aioli), $9.00

I can never order tapas without ordering Patatas bravas. Patatas bravas satisfies my potato addiction and Mejico know how to make a good Patatas bravas. Hot and crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Veganise this side dish by requesting it without aioli.

Overall, Mejico is an impressive Mexican tapas joint with a great range of drinks and vegan food options.
