Vegan Review: Veganerie, Bangkok, Thailand

Apple crumble with ice-cream, 175 baht

I don't know about you but when I go travelling I become slightly obsessed with researching everything about the area. Everything from the sights to the food (okay, mostly the food).
Anyone who knows me knows that I have the biggest sweet tooth. So it was no surprise that when I discovered Veganerie, a 100% vegan bakery in Thailand's capital city, the bakery would be added to my Thailand To-Eat list.

Veganerie is located on the top level of Mercury Ville shopping centre in Bangkok. It was about a 15-20minute walk from Phayathai train station. Yes it was hot and humid, although by walking we got to walk past a temple, the Erawan Shrine, multiple massive shopping centres and numerous street food stands and markets. And it was SO worth the walk.

It was hard to make a choice from the extensive menu which includes dishes such as waffles, cakes, ice-cream and more sweet treats.

Eventually I decided on the warm apple crumble with a scoop of almond ice-cream and topped with whipped cream. I was incredibly impressed with the whipped cream which had the texture and taste of traditional whipped cream. The apples were warm and sweet and the mixture of warm, soft apples, crunchy crumble, cold almond ice-cream and smooth whipped cream was indulgent and a well deserved treat (I think) after walking for 20 minutes through the humid city streets.

There is a running joke with one of my family friends that he always asks for apple crumble for dessert no matter what the cuisine. We've been out for Indian or Thai and he's asked for apple crumble. Needless to say it wasn't on the menu. Although I don't blame him, apple crumble always hits the spot!

Gluten-free Choc Fudge Cake with ice-cream, 210 baht

The Chocolate Fudge Cake (gluten free) with ice-cream was moist and sweet yet not as rich or heavy as I expected it to be. It is possible after all to have a chocolate fudge cake that doesn't leave you feeling heavy!

The owners of the store are passionate vegan advocates and have various articles and information available in store for those who are interested. Otherwise it's just a great place to meet for breakfast, dessert or when sweet cravings hit.

Although I would have liked to try everything on the menu right there and then, if I did I may not have been physically able to continue our 3 week trip around Thailand because it probably would have induced a 3 week food coma. So I ordered up a bag of Veganerie goodies and took them away.

Since my trip, Veganerie has added savoury items to the menu such as sushi, carbonara waffles and more. So I'd definitely visit again if I get to go back to Thailand.
