Vegan Review: Harvest Vegetarian Restaurant, Rozelle

Harvest Vegetarian Restaurant is a cute little restaurant in Rozelle that has been on my To-Eat list since I moved to Sydney's Inner West over a year ago.

HV has occupied Rozelle since 1969 with the newest owners, Adam and Michael, running the restaurant since 1995. The restaurant serves a variety of Modern Australian cuisine that's 100% vegetarian with a few vegan options. For those interested in learning vegetarian and vegan dishes, cooking classes are available for 4+ people at $95 a head and are usually held on Sundays. Or learn at home with Adam's book, Harvest Vegetarian, which can be purchased and autographed at the restaurant.

The fairy light strewn facade makes the heritage building easily found along the quiet Rozelle street. Street parking is typical of the Inner West and usually involves a short walk.

I was disappointed to find that my online booking that I'd booked a week in advance couldn't be found when we arrived on a busy Saturday night. The indoor dining was at full capacity and the owner offered us an outdoor table until a table inside became available. An outdoor table was set for us while we waited for an opening. It was a chilly September night so we rugged up and opened a bottle of red wine. Wine is my favourite jumper.

Our waitress was sweet and bubbly. She explained that she was still learning the menu as she'd started only a week before. She fielded our questions well and double-checked vegan options with the kitchen just in case.

Indian Pakorhas (vegan by request), $12.90

HV has three good-looking vegan entree options on the menu. We decided to start with some nice, warm pakorhas. Not the best pakorhas I've had and only two pakorhas for $12.90 but they warmed us up and had more veggies than many other pakorhas I've tried. The large pakorhas are filled with carrots, beans, capsicum, onions and potatoes. They were hot and crunchy with chilli sauce for dipping.

As we finished the entree an inside table became free and we jumped at the opportunity to go inside. It was cozy and warm inside, abuzz with chatter from the full dining room.

English Spinach and Kumara Gnocchi (vegan by request), $24.50

The English Spinach and Kumara Gnocchi is a small but tasty dish. The vegan option is made with a tomato and sage sauce which adds richness to the subtle-tasting, soft parcels of gnocchi.

Apple, Berry and Nut Crumble, $14.50

The token vegan dessert on HV's menu is an Apple, Berry and Nut Crumble. I added a scoop of coconut sorbet because I don't believe in apple crumble without ice cream.

I had low expectations since the waitress said it wasn't one of the popular desserts but it was quite good! The mix of tastes and textures made up for the presentation so I'd be happy to order this dessert again. I find experiences that start out with low expectations often turn out to be the best ones.

Overall, HV provides a nice vegetarian/vegan meal in a cute and cozy setting. Just be sure to call ahead to book.
