Crispy coated fishless filets, crunchy coleslaw, zesty homemade tartar sauce and creamy avocado all packed into a fresh, soft burger bun. Try my healthier new and cruelty-free take on the McDonald's Filet O Fish.
If you've read my recent posts on Bliss & Chips vegan fish and chip shop, my homemade tartar sauce recipe or my fishless and chips recipe during the last week you'll know that I tried Gardein Fishless Filets for the first time. Not usually one for mock meats, I was surprisingly impressed with these crunchy little fishless filets. The taste and texture is similar to the more processed and battered fish you find at fish and chip shops so it's not too fish-like (although I don't think I'd be ready for their mock chicken or beef yet). After making the classic fish and chips meal I wondered what other recipes the filets could be used in and remembered the Filet O Fish burgers at McDonalds. When I was growing up my Mum was reluctant to let me go vegetarian. She had the typical concerns regarding protein and iron, although when it came down to it, the main concern was "what the hell can I feed her?". We went through phases of me being able to stomach chicken for dinner, then when I could no longer stomach chicken my Mum tried to replace that with fish. To me, fish was even worse than chicken but I felt like I had no other choice. If I had to eat fish it had to be the most tasteless kind. If it was battered and fried it tasted even less like fish too, which was a little easier. I had a few Filet O Fish burgers before I discovered you could order a fries burger. Potato is the best.
And so I tried a take on the Filet O Fish burger, adding crunchy coleslaw salad for the taste, texture and nutritional value. Adding avocado because, well..any excuse to have avocado. And choosing not to add cheese because it really doesn't need it. This was one of the best burgers I've had in a while (if I do say so myself) and for someone who doesn't like fish, Gardein has done a great job of making a fish-like product I would gladly eat again.
What do you think of mock meats? Do you have a favourite burger filling? What would you make with Gardein's Fishless Filets?
Makes 1 Filet O Fishless Burger
Ingredients
- 1 soft bread roll
- 2 Gardein Fishless Filets
- 1/2 an avocado
- A handful of coleslaw (pre-cut from Woolies if you're feeling extra lazy)
- 2-3 tablespoons vegan tartare sauce (recipe here)
Recipe
1. Cut bread roll in half and spread a fine layer of avocado on the bottom half of the bun.
2. Shallow fry 2 Gardein Fishless Filets until golden brown then place on paper towel to remove excess oil.
3. Place fishless filets on the burger.
4. Add a layer of vegan tartare sauce.
5. Add a layer of coleslaw.
6. Add remaining avocado.
7. Top with the top half of the bread roll.
I made my first Flipagram! How cute is it?
