Anything you can do, I can do vegan. And fish and chips is no exception. Although this isn't a fancy gourmet recipe, it's a good one to add to the Lazy Vegan's Recipe Book. It may even be one to add to the Things You Thought You'd Never Eat Again After Going Vegan list.
Recently Bliss and Chips, a 100% vegan fish and chip shop, opened in Newtown. Serving up hot and crunchy cruelty free versions of classic fish and chip shop favourites. After visiting Bliss and Chips then in the same week shopping at NJ45 Supermarket (the vegetarian supermarket in Rouse Hill) and discovering Gardein Fishless Filets in the frozen section I thought I'd give homemade fish and chips a go myself.
The Gardein Fishless Filets are so close to the classic fish from the fish and chip shop it's almost scary. I shallow fried them which gave them a super crunchy batter and the texture of the filling is surprisingly similar to the real deal. I'm not usually a fan of mock meats but I could make an exception for these.
Homemade chips are so easy to make and are much healthier (and tastier) than their frozen counterparts. I also made tartare sauce to go with the fish and chips and was so happy with how it turned out. I think I even like it more than the egg-based tartare sauce I grew up with.
Yesterday I shared my tartare sauce recipe and today I'm sharing the full fish and chip recipe.
Serves 1
Ingredients
- 3 Gardein Fishless Filets
- 3 potatoes
- Tartare Sauce (recipe here)
Optional: Salad (although not required because apparently you don't make friends with this)
Recipe
1. Cut potatoes into 1cm thick slices.
2. Line a baking tray with baking paper, place chips onto the tray and season with coconut oil, salt and paprika.
3. Bake for 20-30 minutes or until golden brown.
4. Shallow fry Gardein Fishless Filets in a small frypan until golden brown on both sides. Place on paper towel to soak up excess oil.
5. Serve up fish, chips and tartare sauce and enjoy.
What do you think of mock meats? Do you have any other childhood favourites you'd like to veganise?
