Vegan Review: Nourishing Quarter, Redfern

Somehow over the course of the last year I've managed to develop a To-Eat List.
Yes, a list of places I want to eat at. Please tell me I'm not the only one..?

I guess moving to in the Inner West you can't help but encounter numerous dining suggestions and stumble across interesting cafes and restaurants in the area you just have to try. So when I heard about a Vietnamese-South American fusion restaurant close to work I just had to try it. My friend Ally and I meet for dinner every few weeks to catch up and I love that we try a new restaurant every time.

Nourishing Quarter is a quaint, little restaurant on the popular dining strip of Cleveland Street in Redfern. Only a short 15 minute walk from Central train station, I met my friend Ally after work for dinner for the 6.00pm time slot. When I made the booking (weekday bookings are recommended, weekend bookings essential!) we were given a choice between the 6.00-7.55pm time slot or 8.15pm-closing time.

In contrast to the Vietnamese-South American menu, the restaurant is decorated in kitsch British decor. The menu is put together like a theatre production guide which makes for an interesting read, and a long wait for the waitress before we're ready to order. It was hard to make a decision but we choose a few dishes to share and we're finally ready to order.

The Three Sisters, $14.00

A popular entree is The Three Sisters which includes one of each of the three spring rolls on the menu.

1. Nourishing Roll
2. Sweet Angel Roll
3. Sacre Bi Roll

All three rolls are fresh and tasty, however the Sacre Bi rolls are a clear winner for me. Filled with quinoa, chia, tofu, sweet potato noodles and a fresh mix of sprouts and greens, the Sacre Bi rolls were by far the tastiest and most filling.

Passage to India (via Saigon, from the Minh Dynasty), $21.50

Next was an aromatic curry with textured tofu pieces, pumpkin, chickpeas, peas and amaranth seeds, served with a fresh salad and ama-noa grains. The Passage to India was rich and creamy and possibly my favourite dish of the night (besides the Sacre Bi rolls).

Pho-ever more nourished soup with buckwheat and purple sweet kumara noodles, $18.50

The Pho-ever More Nourished Soup is a Vietnamese Pho Noodle Soup with tofu strips, sprouts and Vietnamese Basil, served with purple sweet kumera noodles. The sweet kumara noodles are The Best and although I can't eat the tofu (soy allergy) which makes up the majority of the meal the rest is fresh and flavoursome. And did I mention those sweet kumara noodles?!

Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake, $12.50

By this stage we were full (although there's always room for dessert) and when we had a look at the dessert menu the Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake won us over.

The frozen cheesecakes supplied to NQ are presented quite simply and the flavours subtle, not too sweet, I almost couldn't taste the raspberry in fact. It was sugar and dairy free though so it's basically good for you, right?

Overall, NQ serves up a refreshingly unique menu and is definitely worth a try.
