Vegan Review: The Tokyo Noodle Bar Zu Zu Zu, Newtown

This Japanese Noodle Bar popped up on King Street a few months ago and is serving Newtown a much needed dose of Ramen. With vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options, Zu Zu Zu knows how to cater to those in the area.

I treated my Mum to a food crawl in Newtown for Father's Day. We started with a drink at Corridor Bar before strolling down to Zu Zu Zu. What drew me in was the sign for Gluten-Free Vegan Ramen, something I didn't expect to be able to find easily.

Seaweed, $4.80
4 Steamed Vegetable Gyoza (vegan), $4.80

For starters we shared Seaweed and the Steamed Vegetable Gyoza. The seaweed is a standard seaweed salad and is always one of my favourite Japanese dishes. The steamed vegetable gyoza was subtle in flavour and texture.

Gluten-free Vegan Miso Ramen, $12.90

I love that Ramen is basically a fancy version of 2-minute noodles, something I lived off for many years. I would add more ingredients to it every now and then and ramen is a comforting reminder of the meals I made when I was young and broke.

Mum ordered the Teriyaki Chicken Ramen and I ordered the Vegan Miso Ramen. The Miso based Gluten-free Vegan Ramen came out steaming hot, topped with seaweed, corn, broccoli, carrot and bean sprouts. The soup was subtle in flavour and could have done with a little more oomph.

Overall the food was quite simple so it would be a good choice for when you're looking for something affordable, subtle, healthy and fast.

  1. Wow a gluten free vegan ramen! That's great-I always thought you needed gluten to make the ramen noodles but clearly not :)
