Vegan Review: Black Star Pastry, Rosebery

Sitting on a quiet corner block in Rosebery is the busy, bustling cafe that is Black Star Pastry. The original store was established in Newtown in 2008 by the award-winning Pastry Chef Christopher Thè. The Rosebery store then opened it's doors in 2014. Tables fill up fast and the queue for the counter almost leads outside. The windows are filled with little, delicious works of art and my friend and I are amused by the gingerbread Ginger Ninjas and Naked Ninjas.

Vegan Chocolate Popcorn Cake, $6.50

Famous for their signature GF Watermelon Cake (non-vegan), Black Star Pastry offers one vegan cake - The Vegan Chocolate Popcorn Cake.

The cake is delivered to our table and is almost too pretty to eat. It's dense yet soft and isn't too rich or sweet. I don't usually like popcorn but the caramelised popcorn is sweet and crunchy and I eat every last piece.

Iced Tea of the Day, $6.50

My friends order coffee (they use Little Marionette beans) which come in takeaway cups with the cutest designs on them. The Iced Tea of the Day is a little strong for me and I wish it were a little sweeter. But it goes well with the sweetness of the cake.

I loved the vibe of the Rosebery cafe and am just hoping they'll make more vegan options in the (near) future. Please and thank you :)

  1. I didn't know that they did a vegan chocolate cake. Have you tried my recipe? I worked on it for ages and some people say that they prefer it to non vegan cake :)
