Colourful crochet polka dots have been popping up on my blog a couple of times over the last month (here and here). Now I finally get to share with you what I was making them for - The Polka Dot Car Tissue Box Cover!
Since I bought my first car way back in January 2012 I planned to 'Chelseyfy' the interior. To make drives a bit more colourful and comfortable. I planned to make so many things for Floyd like car seat covers, cushions, a blanket, accessories..I admit now that it was a tad bit ambitious.
A year and a half later and I have finally started the Chelsification. What do you think?
I chose a black cover with colourful polka dots for my car so that the black would camouflage with my car interior and the dots would look like floating pops of colour. I think a cover with rainbow rows could look really cute too!
Would you like to make one for your car too?
I haven't had a chance to take step by step pics as we've been so busy with packing and preparing for the move so here is the written tutorial. Let me know if you have any questions.
This is what you'll need to make it:
+ 5.00mm crochet hook (US-H8)
+ 8 ply yarn - I used Moda Vera Marvel 8 ply 100g balls. 1 ball of each colour (black, dark green, hot pink, light green, light blue, dark purple, orange, yellow, light purple)
+ Darning needle
Stitches used
+ US Double Crochet (UKTreble) - Yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull through stitch, yarn over, pull through two loops on hook, yarn over, pull through remaining 2 loops on hook.
+ US Single Crochet (UKDoubleCrochet) - Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull through stitch, yarn over, pull through both loops on hook.
+ Slipstitch - Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull through stitch and loop on hook.
Tissue box cover
1. Make a slipknot (leave a tail about 10cm long to sew in later).
2. Chain 3. Slipstitch into the first chain from the slipknot to form a ring.
3. Chain 3. Work one double crochet into the ring. Chain 1.
4. *Yarn over, insert into ring, yarn over, pull through ring, yarn over, pull through 2 loops, yarn over, insert into ring, yarn over, pull through ring, yarn over, pull through 2 loops, yarn over, pull through remaining 3 loops, Chain 1*. You should now have 2 spokes. Repeat between ** 6 more times. You should end up with 8 spokes in total.
5. Slipstitch into first spoke to join.
6. Slipstitch into space between the first and second spoke to begin next round.
7. Chain 3. 2 double crochet into the same space. Chain 1.
8. *3 double crochet into next space. Chain 1*
9. Repeat between ** into each space between spokes 6 more times (8 clusters in total).
10. Slipstitch into the first post of the first cluster to join.
You've just finished the base of the cover! Now onto the rows that make up the body of the cover.
11. Chain 1. Single crochet into each stitch around circle.
12. Continue single crochet around and around until you have about 32 rows of single crochet from base. Fasten off.

I love the idea of making over your car! My car is probably the least "me" thing in my life.
