Chelsey Crafts: A Vegan's Review of Pilgrims Vegetarian Cafe, Cronulla

Embark on a foodie pilgrimage to Cronulla to feast on burgers, wraps, salads, coffee, juices, smoothies and more and discover what the South Coast of NSW has savoured for over 30 years.

Pilgrims is a whole food vegetarian cafe that has been serving delicious vegetarian fare on the south coast of New South Wales since the Eighties. The newer Cronulla location opened in late 2013, keeping the menu true to the original that has proven to be so popular in Milton for the last few decades.

The sun filled open plan cafe has views of South Cronulla Beach from it's upper level location on the corner of Gerrale Street. The rustic interior and friendly team add to the relaxed coastal vibe.

Order, pay and grab a table number from the counter before nabbing a window seat.

Most dishes can be made vegan though I opted for the vegan crowd favourite, the Millennium Burger. Filled with a fresh homemade curry lentil patty, fried onion, avocado, lettuce, beetroot, cucumber, sprouts, tahini dressing & sweet chilli sauce on a toasted whole meal roll (gluten free option available), it's easy to see why this burger is a favourite amongst vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike.

The Millennium Burger $12.00

The wholemeal bun is crisp and light. The salad crunchy and fresh. The homemade curry lentil patty which is made of lentils, brown rice and curry spices is wholesome and delicious especially mixed with the tahini dressing and sweet chilli sauce. The Millennium Burger is a satisfying burger that's actually good for you too.

Pilgrims also does Mexican nights from 6-9pm Thursday through Saturday. Think standard Mexican favourites plus the addition of a 'North Shore Plate' which is similar to a burrito bowl although it's served with a side of toasted corn bread and heaped with a generous serving of Mexican black bean brew (not confirmed if this dish can be veganised). Mexican nights at Cronulla are BYO for wine only.

Overall, Pilgrims is the perfect laid back cafe to share a healthy and delicious brunch by the beach.
